Job Summary
The key function of the Sports Development Manager (SDM) is to lead, direct and manage the Sports Development team and to ensure the section's activities are delivered in a cost effective way within a culture of innovative development of programmes and services. The SDM should be a pro-active member of the UBS management team (1 of 7) and contribute to strategic and business planning both within the management team and leading the business planning and monitoring within his/her own team. The SDM will represent UBS on relevant internal and external committees and partnerships.
Main Duties
Managing the sports development team
  • Agreeing individual work programmes + monitoring and 'coaching' staff via regular 1 to 1 meetings
  • Planning and carrying out annual performance reviews and reward management scheme, including constructive feedback
  • Ensuring annual training plans are in place for team members
  • Overseeing or ensuring recruitment & induction of new staff
  • To create a positive and supportive working environment with high morale and shared values both within the team and in working with other sections of UBS. To always lead by example
  • To encourage a creative and innovative team working environment where staff can learn from their own experiences and those of others in the team
  • To delegate financial management for individual programmes to relevant staff and support them in the monitoring process
  • To ensure commitment to the implementation of Investors in People within the Sports Development section
Business Planning within sports developmen
  • To work with the sports development team to produce, monitor and revise the business plan for the section in conjunction with the UBS strategic and business plan
  • To produce relevant KPIs for the section and agree, monitor and report on challenging but realistic KPIs
  • To lead the production and review of contingency plans for sport development section
  • To work with the marketing section to undertake research into current markets and future business potential
  • To work with the marketing section and other UBS functions to ensure the effective marketing and promotion of UBS activities and programmes
  • To ensure that business processes and systems (including the relevant application of IT) are implemented effectively and efficiently in the pursuance of UBS / SD's objectives
Contribution to the UBS Management Team
  • To contribute proactively to UBS mgt meetings
  • To plan and deliver specific aspects of UBS mgt meetings when requested
  • To contribute to both general and sports development aspects of strategic and business planning for UBS
  • To contribute to (or lead as appropriate) effective cross-functional meetings and projects within UBS
Budget Planning and management
  • To work with the UBS Accountant to set challenging but realistic annual budgets
  • To monitor financial performance against budget targets on a monthly basis; to identify and investigate any anomalies. To report any major anomalies to the Director of Sport along with suggested solutions
  • To use available management information and reporting processes to carry out financial projections and planning for the section
  • To ensure that university financial regulations are strictly complied with in all instances
Developing Partnerships
  • To initiate and contribute towards the development of relevant and effective partnerships with UBS, both within the University and with partners external to the University
  • To monitor the cost-benefit of partnerships across a range of financial and non-financial criteria, matched to UBS strategic objectives
Personal development and training
  • To be responsible for one's own on-going personal development programme in agreement with the Director of Sport
  • To develop a professional involvement in either BUCS or other relevant professional bodies as an effective route to personal development
Other
  • To ensure compliance to all statutory requirements (such as health & safety), policies, procedures and accepted good practice, such as that of national governing bodies of sport and other relevant national agencies and bodies
  • To ensure that all coaches and instructors have relevant and up to date coaching awards and other qualifications
  • To ensure that relevant employment law is adhered to in the appointment and management of ALP coaches / instructors and Athletic Union Club coaches
Person Specification
Essential
  • Degree or equivalent in a sport and/or management or related subject
  • A nationally recognised sports coaching or fitness instructor or equivalent qualification
  • Detailed knowledge of the delivery structure for sport in England/UK at national, regional and sub-regional levels
  • Knowledge of current developments in strategy, policy and funding at national, regional and sub-regional levels
  • Broad knowledge of the structure and delivery of sport in higher education at national and institutional levels
  • A thorough knowledge of sports development principles and practices, including key statutory regulations governing sporting activities in the UK, e.g. child protection, health & safety regs

You will implement a strategy to maximise Rugby League opportunities and increase sustainable participation within the Higher and Further Education sector, development of sustainable Higher and Further Education and maintain and support the development of the Student rugby league alumni.
In order to be successful you will develop existing male and female University, sixth form and college rugby league clubs to improve their structures, develop committee personnel and increase the depth of playing squads. Finally, you will seek increase and maintain the profile of HE/FE through regular publication of promotional material, development of resources, funding and targeting specific markets while assisting at local, regional and national events, such as showpiece events and Grand Finals.

Working with a small team, you will be an experienced cricket scorer who is confident working with IT equipment.
Ideally you will have a scorer's qualification and knowledge of the ECB and ICC current match regulations. The ability to concentrate, pay attention to detail and produce good written material is essential.
Hours of work for the position are variable but we will require you to be in attendance during all our matches at Trent Bridge throughout the cricket season. Detailed Description

The MSAC Institute of Training is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) for the fitness, sport and recreation industry. We also deliver training in the areas of Compliance and Risk, Professional Development and Sports Facility Management, as well as providing facility hire, consultancy and career management services designed to benefit the industry at every level. Due to recent growth, we are seeking expressions of interest for Trainers and Assessors for the following qualification and course areas:

  • Community Recreation
  • Sport & Recreation
  • Fitness
  • Frontline Management
  • Pool Operations
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Risk Management
  • Life Saving Victoria Accredited Training Programs (Senior First Aid, CPR, Pool Lifeguard)
  • Customer Service
  • Sales Skills
Interested applicants should posess:
  • At least 3-5 years recognised industry experience
  • A Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
  • Experience delivering training under the AQTF requirements
  • Current VET professional development
  • Current technical experience/qualifications in at least one of the courses we deliver
Please note, Trainers and Assessors are being sought for sessional/contract based work.
